Assignments S2 Q2

June 2: Last day of school for us. No 8th period classes Wednesday. Enjoy your summer!

Junior project: final draft

Due Tuesday, June 2. Minimum 5000 words. Include your first draft with my comments. Highlight or mark changes you made on your final draft. If you don’t mark any changes, I’ll assume you didn’t make any and you will receive the projected grade I gave you on your first draft. Make deep revisions based on my comments, and give me the best creative writing you’ve got in you. This will count as both a performance grade and as your final test grade in this class.

Junior project: draft 1

Due for workshopping May 22. See project description below. You will be graded on your workshop participation, so bring your best critical thinking even though it’s Friday. Bring a typed draft of your project to work on. After workshopping, turn your project in to me along with the worksheet you received from your workshop partner(s). Attach your character development pages and your outline as well.

Senior project: final draft

Due our last day of classes, May 18. Minimum 5000 words. Include your first draft with my comments. Highlight or mark changes you made on your final draft. If you don’t mark any changes, I’ll assume you didn’t make any and you will receive the projected grade I gave you on your first draft. I know you guys are tired and crispy and you want out of here, but don’t sit your butt on the bench during the final 10 seconds of the game. Give me the best you’ve got. This project will count as both a performance grade and as your final test grade in this class.

Senior project: draft 1

Turn in your epistolary project for this quarter. Minimum 5000 words. You won’t have much time for revisions, so make this draft as perfect as possible. Due Monday, May 11

Senior project first draft to workshop

Bring in a first draft of your senior epistolary project for workshopping. It’s OK if it’s not 100% finished, but you should be close. Bring 2 copies of your draft. Due Friday, May 8

Project proposal

Please submit a proposal for your big epistolary project for this quarter. Include which epistolary form you intend to write in and how you intend to format your piece, your subject, anything you have discovered so far about characters and plot. A page is long enough for the proposal. Remember the project itself will have a minimum requirement of 5000 words.

Due date: Monday, April 20 for seniors; Friday, May 8 for juniors.

DAI assignment revisions

Revise and rewrite your DAI assignment. Remember to add character development, tension, imagery and details. Also develop the live story of each character or characters. Letters contain mundane details, and those details will help you develop the character and the story. Don’t just choose a plot line and write about that. Real people don’t write letters like that. Up your word count to 2500 words.

Due May 6 for seniors and juniors.

Prompts from seniors assignment (juniors only)

Finish and polish the assignment using prompts from the seniors that we started in class on Monday. Shoot for around 1500-2000 words. I will read these to the seniors, so make them good. Remember to show the character through actions as much as you can.

Due April 30

Senior trip to Cincinnati assignment

Create an epistolary form of writing from the trip to Cincinnati. Choose your own genre and topic. Minimum 1500 words. Due Thursday, April 23.

Due date: Monday, April 20 for seniors; Tuesday, May 5 for juniors.

Dayton Art Institute field trip assignment

During the visit to the museum, take a flash-free photo of any work of art that catches your attention, and that you might want to write about.

Using that piece of art as inspiration, write 1500-2000 words in epistolary form. Feel free to play around with ideas. Even though none of this art is contemporary, you might try writing in email, diary, text, intergalactic memo.

This assignment is worth 100 performance points. You will be required to submit at least one revision. You may use this piece as a prelude to your big project, but you will be expected to revise deeply and add a lot to it if you go that route.

Due date: Monday, April 20 for seniors. Thursday, April 23 for juniors.
